I went out in 14 degree weather to try out the Minelab x-terra 70 I bought. My first time out metal detecting I found a rock. Took it home to clean it up hoping it was something else. It's just a rock.

View attachment 1399209 hi iam seeing some crystals and also maybe it is metallic ore be careful maybe something inside...is it magnetic? which mode u find that rock.. all metal ?

Hot Rocks

I just got started detecting. I bought a used machine with no instructions. I'm not positive what mode it was in. It is slightly magnetic. It's heavy. I thought it was iron, but it's a rock.

Dug a lot of them

Me too Art. I dig allot of coal DI's rock looks like coal, although I'm thinking coal is not magnetic. Maybe DI's rock is a meteor? I dig allot of coal, most of my sites at one point in time I figure they were using coal to heat there home. I know coal was big in South Jersey being used as fuel to heat homes. On any average day out in my fields I'll dig two or three pieces only because I will not notch out anything and sometimes I'm 98% sure it's coal but I just have to make sure it's not a half Real.

I found a handmade brick and it showed as it was silver. I am not sure what is up with that. But after thinking about it I might go back and get it and crack it open. Maybe they hid a coin in there... Possible?

Yes very possible. I have heard of coins in bricks. And coins between bricks as homes are built put in cornerstones.

You can probably get a instruction manual for that machine from minelab.

Not to worry, we all dig them from time to time, sometimes a lot of the time!

Treblehunter is correct, even though you know 96% of the time; it's that 4% that makes us dig.

Congrats on your first one. Since it was 14F outside when you found it, it's actually a "Cold" Hot Rock! Let it warm up and see how your detector responds to it!
