HOW DO YOU USE AND APPLY DRILL HOLES?

I have read a few things on here about drill holes, and that the depth of one can tell you a distance to go. I also have read that by putting a stick in the drill hole you can get a heading. Is there any truth to this practice? We have a couple of drill holes involved in the trail we are working, and I would like to hear any ideas you guys might have as to what we could try.

Dusty would be the man to talk to about drill holes. He is probably one of the most knowledgeable people around about that subject.
