Interesting article that includes some metal detector history . . . :icon_study:

Local hobbyists use metal detectors to dig up the past, reunite items and owners

The first metal detector was built by Alexander Graham Bell in 1881. Bell built the electromagnetic device quickly to find a bullet in the wounded and dying president, James Garfield. Bell failed and Garfield died, but a useful device was born.

In the 1920s, inventor Gerhard Fischar created the first portable metal detector and began selling the machines commercially in 1931.

I've read about the MD/Garfield fail. Evidently the bed springs messed up AGB's signal response.

From this, I've implemented a couple of Best Practices for safe and effective metal detecting survival.

1) When I fear I am at risk of an attempted assassination, I ALWAYS sleep on a traditional wood-framed futon.

2) I ALWAYS ground balance my machine over an overweight, recently shot politician.

Good one, Kevin!

I just keep a long, 9-inch hemostat and a pair of needle-nosed pliers hanging on the wall, just in case . . .
