Not anything I'm familiar with, but I'd say the first one looks fairly modern and the second looks pretty old. Markings on the side of the second may help in dating it. Good luck, cool finds.
Thanks. I doubt I would be able to make out any markings but I'll look tomorrow.

The fact you come from "Placerville California"...The place that kicked off the largest gold rush in history...I would presume that these picks were used for the 1849 gold rush.

I certainly hope so. I have a feeling they are both relatively modern.

How would I tell?
Second pick has the usual chisel point on one side and spike point on the other tip. Are you saying that the raised areas on the shaft portion are not original to the piece? Thought they looked perhaps like proprietary decorative markings. But then, like I said, I sure know nothing about such things.

I just realized I misread your earlier post. I thought you were referring to a maker's mark. I have no reason to believe the design is not original to the piece.
