How to search mucky clay river bottom water

I wants to stick to my shovel and the water gets go dirty can't see anything.

Is it just clay? or are there rocks in it too? If its just clay, you can make a floating screen. Just make sure the screen is below water level, and the water should do the work. Or you could try one of the heavier duty sand scoops. Good luck
