Allot depended on Their personal up-bringing & Time involved I'm sure.
So the possibilities are Limitless.

Out side I would guess most were smart enough to hide it near something they would remember.

A boulder,Shed, Very large Tree, Etc.

Unfortunately during Battles Things can change, at least in the case of Sheds,
they can be burnt down, But 20/20 hindsight didn't help in all cases.
add to this some were never able to return.

Point being every inch of a Property holds possibilities.
this is why so many large treasures are found in open fields
in England. The Trees & other markers are Long gone

Thing about trees, if they are big now, they were probably small then. If they were big then, they are probably gone now.
Depends on the tree and how long ago the expected cache was buried.

Ask them...Sorry just being a smart A**

Actually they hid money under or next to fence posts, sometimes next to the house foundation or porch, also in the walls was pretty common. As far as battlefields i doubt it because the Armies were always on the move. One will find lots of coins near old trees but not because they were buried most likely pocket spills. If you knew of an old military encampment you may find, buttons and a coin or two.

Have heard that they would bury it where it could be seen from their bedroom window...maybe fence rows near the old property lines....
