Re: how'd they do that?

Hmmm, That very well could be but. I have seen in a Machine shop when someone might mount it for use as an electode in an EDM machine. Usually this would be just for fun or experiment as they try to "burn" the reverse image into a piece of steel or other metal.

If this is what was done, the coin will look sand blasted on one side only.
The details will not show as sharp as normal and it would be thinner.

The electrodes below show as unused condition.

It's pretty strange. I can't believe how thin it is and still have so much relief left in it. This is a pic comparing it to a normal dime's thickness.

Re: how'd they do that?

Not sure how they did it with a dime... but back in high school in chemisty class we would take zinc pennies, chizzle out a tiny bit so you got post the outer layer, and then placed it in some kind of acid and it ate out the entire inside and left a hollow penny. It was actually kind of cool.

Re: how'd they do that?

My guess: reverse electroplated to remove the outer layers of the clad dime, leaving only the copper core. Removing that much metal would also reduce the diameter.

Re: how'd they do that?

looks kind of like a coin that has been cooking in an electrosis bath for too long.
