Huge Mortar Fragment

I found this mortar fragment yesterday near where I found the 1600s buckle. This mortar must have been massive! It is about 3 inches thick. I'm not sure of the sizes of mortars so I can't say how big this would have been.

That looks a frag from a 13-inch mortar shell fired from a 13-inch siege mortar - they were massive guns weighing 17,000 pounds. They could throw a 218-pound shell over 4,000 yards. I have found a number of 13-inch shell frags around Vicksburg over the years.
