Since not all creek bottoms are sand, you'll need a tough scoop that won't bend on you. I use the Sunspot http://www.sunspotedm.com/beachscoops/ The Stealth is the top one in my book. There are cheaper ones out there.

In fact, the creek bottom I would be digging is mud and rock. So, the Stealth would take that kind of beating?

Bamabill, In northeast Georgia I have been using a small bladed shovel with a long handle. It's light, helps with balance in the rocks, gets between the creek rocks and loosens them up easier than a large shovel. Am in the gold belt and it works great for relics. Can be tough to find. Start with Home Depot and local hardware store. I also use it in my sluice and highbanker. Very easy on the back
