Not sure if this question is in the right forum or not but here it goes.

I was just reading through a book I have called United States Treasure Atlas Volume 4. In the book it says that freshwater pearls can be found in many of the streams throughout the entire state of Iowa(the state I live in). Does anybody have any ideas how a person would go about finding some of these. It kinda sounds like fun to me. I haven't really had any luck finding information about doing this.

From what I understand, most of the freshwater mollusks that produce pearls in U. S. waters are protected species and harvesting them for whatever reason is illegal.
