Hunting near Biloxi?

Hi!
I'm planning on visiting the casinos in Biloxi with my parents. We haven't been back since Katrina hit. We usually spend a few days there and I always get tired of gambling before it's time to leave. I'm seriously considering taking my metal detector(s) but wonder what the local rules are about treasure hunting. Any information anyone can provide would be most welcome.
Thanks!
Ruth

Hey Ruth,

Unless things change within 1 year when Outback Duo and I ventured over there to try our luck. Many of the beach areas were roped off and closed. One area we hit, we were told by a local on the beach that 4' of sand was added to that area. All we found was clad and pull tabs. Things are getting slowly back to normal, but it's still pretty much torn up. Let us know how your trip turns out. Good Luck!!

Thanks for the quick reply, River Rat! We're looking to head there at the end of next month, so it will be a bit of time before I report in with my "findings". I'm glad to hear that there will be opportunities to hunt even though the findings may be few and far between. As is often true - ANY chance to swing the detector is a good one. (And thanks for the link!)

Good luck Saint,

I've been down here for work since July,

I've found some clad there, and a silver ring, and a good bit of trash. (some rather odd stuff I can only guess that it was put there by the "Storm")

Try the seafood buffet at the Hard Rock on wed...delicious.

i have been detecting in longbeach for the last couple of weeks. about $3.50 in clad pennies, dimes & quarters anywhere from 2-6 inches deep. LOTS OF TRASH from frying pans to metal steps!!! very frustrating, i get a clear coin signal showing a depth of 6-8 inches with my CZ-5 and when i reach the target its a can? maybe i will have better luck after spring break!! or i can start collecting aluminum cans

Wow, guys - doesn't sound all that promising.... But, hey we all know that any day swinging a detector is a good one, so I think I'll still pack mine and step outside of the casinos for a bit of fresh air now and then. I'll keep you posted on my finds - trash and otherwise! Thanks for all the input.

Hello Ruth

I live in Ocean Springs which is just the next town over from biloxi. I have hit the beach a few times since the Hurricane and it does have a lot of trash on them. But they are dredging from the sound and pumping new sand to replenish what they lost from Katrina and also have been cleaning it with shifters machines. at least they have down where the casinos are and up pass the Light House. Just a suggestion you might want to try over in Ocean Springs front beach they are really keeping it clean, might have better luck. You can see the front beach from the new bridge they have built as you travel over it that and it's the first right turn once over the bridge which will lead you down to the beach. No restriction on Metal Detecting that I know of and I have been living here for 20 years. Good Luck to you both at the Casino and Swinging the Coil.

Just returned from Mississippi last week. Hunted the beach in Pascagoula, found a silver heart with a row of diamonds in it.
Went to the beach in Biloxi, and in one place about six feet round I found 28 quaters, 5 dimes, and 4 nickles.
didn't find much anything else except trash, and nails. Picked up all that was found, and place them trash can's in the area.
Good luck when you get there.

Hi Six.... My wife and I spent the last week in March in the Biloxi and Gulfport area. Beaches were totally deserted and covered with the sand sifter tracks. We detected in Gulfport and found nothing of value. Great fun though. Lots of large pieces of siding still buried in the older layer of sand. It looks like about 4" of new sand has been added. You can see the color difference as you dig. I did find a fist size chunk of rotting wood with a silver colored, half dollar sized round rim showing. Got very excited for a few hours while carefully using a tooth brush and toothpicks to slowly dig it out. It ended up being a old rotted out square headed bolt through a washer. Electrolysis had caused the rim of the washer to shine like new silver. Disappointing but we had a 2 hour rush checking it out! Plan on going back next month for another fix...

Well, I went - but left after 2 days.
It was still sad for me. The beautiful stately old homes facing the bay were swept away to their foundations. The beach was either being reclaimed by casinos or being replenished; not much of a chance to hunt there! Truthfully, though there may have been opportunities/places to hunt I just couldn't bring myself to consider it. Sort of felt like hunting a graveyard - which I know some of us are not adverse to doing. I am. Hope you have some luck - wherever you choose to hunt.

I just got to Bioloxi today. Ill be trying the beach with the SE just to see how well it does. I hope to hunt from the lighthouse west or one of the fishing areas. They have 90 down to one lane doing a lot of cleaning and fixing. Its kind of difficult to find a place to park because im not sure if its legal to park inside the cones. Anyone want a hunt let me know. Ill let you know what i find, but its sounds like it might be tuff with all that new sand.

Anyone been to Biloxi lately. My wife and i going down for a few days of gambling and of course I am taking my detectors with me. I am sure the beaches are pretty well picked over but for me it's the fun of the hunt. We are going down from the 28-30

They are several local MDers and a lot of visitors that give it a try. Always some type of traffic at the beach, sunbathers, party people and family get togethers, so you just might hit the right spot.
