I am new to gold panning

I have a question; I've an area that am panning and its a dry creek with quarts rock all around. I have found after the rain a layer of white-gray clay with mixed quarts rock in it. i collected some then dried, sifted and panned the clay and found it has a large amount of black sand. i wonder if gold can be in clay?:icon_scratch:
