I cant figure this thing out

I can't figure this thing out

I guess this is where to post this, if not, sorry. I have a radioshack discovery 1000 and I have no idea how to use it, what the knobs do so when I turn it on and try finding stuff outside, all I get are false signals. Here is what I'm working with, please help me out here!

Left knob all the way to the right )or as far as you can turn it without it acting funny and beeping at nothing. Right knob all the way to the left (this one discriminates out stuff so you don't hear it. The further right the more it discriminates out. Little switch to the left to Disc or all metal. All metal don't discriminate stuff out like disc will.
