I had stopped by this large, red brick farmhouse several months ago to ask permission in a nearby field. The old gentleman that lives there looks about as old as the house. He told me that the house was 175 years old, and that it had been metal detected before. I told him I would like to give it a shot some day and he said that would be fine. Yesterday I decided would be a good day to check this place out. I was expecting lots of trash and modern coins, but was hoping for some indian heads, older silver, flat buttons, and maybe a large cent or two.

The previous detectorists must have done a decent job on the coins as I expected to find more. However they did leave a lot of junk in the yard. I did get a worn down Matron Head large cent and a Mercury dime with the right date & wrong mintmark. It is in pretty good shape for an early merc though. I also got a small child's sterling silver ring. I will come back to this place another time. I only covered a small amout of the ground around this place.

Nice digs Steve, too bad about that "D"

Any coin experts out there?

I just noticed something about the 1916 dime. There seems to be a double rim at about 4:00 o'clock on the obverse, and again on the reverse. Is this unusual, or perhaps and error?

I was kinda hesitant to mention it Steve. But you're right. It appears to be what I've heard called a "split rim". A mint error. I've seen a couple of pennies in a show-case like this, but never a dime.

Our area is littered with these kinds of old homes; yum! That does look like a split rim on the Merc; very nice!

Wow, it looks full bands from here. That in itself might fetch some good money even if there's no mintmark. Nice finds.
