I am thinking this is colonial since It was found with 1812 military buttons. Front appears to be a bust. Back appears to be a Roman V . Date at bottom of bust appears to end in 12 or 19.

Looks like its not quite as old as the buttons. I think it is a Liberty Head nickel. Very worn.

Looks to me like the V is pretty off-center if it is a liberty nickel. I'll bet Mackaydon can nail that one for you even in that kind of condition. Great find though!
