60yr old pin and one that I've never seen posted up before, considering all the pins that are posted it makes it really unique. Different and it's good that you snapped that keeper up.

:key:This was turned up by my new Research Department .
In 1942 the U.S. Army dispatched a detachment of W.A.C.personnel to an area around the Florida Everglades. Each W.A.C. member was trained and issued a club that resembled a bowling pin. There was a need to conserve ammunition as we were at war. (WW II). There was also a problem with the local Gator population. Gators would wonder into the base and pose a threat to the base personnel as well as the local population.
This specially trained and equipped unit was charged with intercepting the Gators and clubbing them until they backed off or were killed. They became known as the "Bowling Pin Unit" and were awarded the above medal once it was documented that a member had successfully turned away or killed 10 gators. The award was known as "The Gator Bowling Pin Award"

Think I read about this somewhere.. Gator-Nam.

Everytime the detachment would give chase, the gators would dip back across the the GA border.

We eventually had to pull the boys out cause them commie gators straight overran Florida.

I think they built a monument in commemoration of Gator-Nam in DC, too:

It depicts a couple GI's engaged in intense hand-to-hand combat with a "tooth-mouth" - that was the (now considered disparaging) nickname for those commie bast**ds.

As you could probably tell after seeing the monument, the draft was in full effect and they were calling 'em up YOUNG.

I managed to find the regimental patch as well:

7th Cav - should've known.
Just like Custer, they were bound to face overwhelming odds.

Sweet oddball find, Dave!
Seriously, you might oughtta consider sending that in to the Garrett 'Searcher'... I've noticed that sometimes they pick the nostalgic 'straight out of left field' finds.

Maybe you could win ya a free Garrett Carrot to go with that shiny new Deteknix Quest AT!!!
