I went to the bank today and got this 1928a $50 note, redeemable in gold. Pretty cool IMO.

What a nice find. Did it come in a handful of other $50's or did you get this specifically?

BTW, I wouldn't trade it for gold. A $50 chunk of gold would be pretty darn small... (but it would be funny to go the Treasury and demand gold for the note)

I would nice if they gave you (2) double eagles and (1) eagle to equal $50!

Obviously the Feds are no longer honoring these.. as gold certificates anyway. Still a nice find though.

Nice surprise! A reminder that money was actually worth something...long ago.

Yep they called those in technically, so they don't have to exchange them for something we no longer have....gold.

They are replacing the time capsule at the State House in Boston today, one of the items they put in is a freshly minted 2015 set of coins...maybe our future generations will be able to figure out what those whitish/green little piles of dust are, in the plastic cases. Lol! Sorry I couldn't resist.

Wonder how long it will take the coins and items from the just opened time capsule to disappear?

Now our Fed Reserve Notes (the Fed Reserve being a private bank and no more federal than Fed Express) are backed by nothing except hope…….

Sad that now if you try to redeem it for gold they will probably give you the "Gold" (Really brass) Presidential Dollars. This note's face value has got lower and lower but the gold that could have been redeemed for it 80 years ago has not.

Here is the size of a $50 gold coin, even though this is a reproduction in the photos, it is still the same size as the genuine rare pattern made by the mint in 1877. The reason I chose the copy for the photos is that the photos of the real ones don't show size but I have a life size photo in my coin book and trust me, it is huge!

Here is a genuine example below.
