I Got Hammered!! Colonial Site

My digging partner and I paired up over the weekend and swapped sites. On the first day we started at my colonial site which I have recently discovered a old iron mill ruins. This property is 350 acres plus, I find new sites all over this property. Being that it is a iron mill detecting was tough. My partner dug a KG II, a button, and few other relics. I managed to find a few lantern parts, reed, spoon, a buckle and some other relics. Went to lunch then up to the next location which had some civil war activity. My partner dug 3 silver dimes, 1 silver half, 1 IHP, 2 mini balls (one was confederate 2-ring) and some others. I dug four 3-ring mini balls, 3 merc dimes, 1 barber dime and a barber quarter. Were assuming a 1930s coin spill scattered in a small area by plowing.


The following day went back to the mill site and decided to dig 2ftx2ft plugs and sift the dirt. Area I choose was where several structures once stood about 100 ft from the mill. The amount of iron nails is unbelievable, if you rake your fingers through the soil you would have a few in your hand. From sifting I found a tombac, 3 porcelain, 2 iron, and 1851 Goodyear's button, knife, complete crotal bell, buckle, tons of pottery and glass. What I found next I still cant believe, out came this colonial blue bead and a 1680 King Charles II 2 maravedis cob. My first hammered coin, my hands still shake.

Awesome finds! Crazy how few of those older coins may have been lost in the dirt.....then the odds of that area not being developed.....then swinging the coil over it! Crazy, but the stuff is out there to find.

From research, experience, and talking to local folks this property has remained the same condition since the early settlement in the 1600s. I have found evidence of where the river has eroded and moved paths. You can still find old fossils in the soil.

Thanks deedoubleyou. Darn snow needs to melt so I can get back out there. Checked the site today and its a snow, mud, slushy cow pie mess. LOL
