First off, I want to thank all of you for the excellent advice on getting started with gold panning and etc...

My brother and I went to the Treasure and Gold Expo in Turlock.
I have to say, we had a most excellent time! We spent a good 4 hours looking through the booths, watching demonstrations and trying out gold panning.

Sadly, we bought a bunch of stuff. A double edged sword! Now we are hooked! Now I'm hood too, even though the trip was for my brother.

What we bought:

1. A membership to the GPAA. The Mining book they put out was an excellent resource to go on claims and try our newly acquired prospecting skills.
2. A small sluice. The sluice was reasonably priced and my brother doesn't have to build one. It is rather small, about 8 inces by 30 ? Maybe.
3. Pans. Of course, gotta have a pan.
4. Miscellaneous stuff. Vials, funnel, suction thingy and a couple of other odds and ends.
5. Pay Dirt. We bought $10 worth and the sluice guy gave us free dirt! Really cool guy named Mike. Mike, you rock!

We went to Home Depot and got a black cement mixing basin. Headed home and started learning how to pan. Tomorrow we are going to set up the sluice and play around with it. While we were panning; we found the gold, but dumped it back in the basin for use tomorrow.

While we were panning, we both found it to be relaxing and we had quality time trying to find the gold. And gold we found!
We put a couple of flat pieces in our vial, but I found a cool tiny nugget! The nugget was so cool to look at. It was a tiny version of that 10 lb. nugget we want to find. :tongue3:

We had a wonderful time and am looking forward to a great new outdoor hobby!

The pay dirt is always good to start out. You will learn panning and see gold and you can pan it again to see if you missed any, and prove to yourself you did it right. I go to the GPAA Gold Show in Vegas at the South Point Casino. Great show and...it's Vegas. Did you win any door prizes at the show?:goldpan:

That tiny nugget ... it's like a seed. You'll keep looking for that full grown one; 10 pounds sounds good to me!

And so the adventure begins!

Best of luck to you and your brother!

One of the best addictions to have. First off you get to be outside an enjoy nature. Second you get exercise in a way that doesn't seem like you're "working out". Third you get to learn and with a little luck solve some of the mysteries of geology. (IE: where did that gold come from to start with?) And last but not least you get to meet new people and spend time with new friends and family. There is ALWAYS something new to learn or try out and to say the least... It's never boring!

The door prize raffle started at 4pm and you had to be present to win. We had to leave earlier than we would have liked.

"There is no cure for gold fever. Though is isn't fatel the only way to treat it is to dig in the dirt." Paraphrased from the late Nugget Man. Welcome to you and your brother Joanne to the wonderful world of mining and the great outdoors. Good luck on that 10# nugget search!

I go out of town in Nevada i'm immediately surrounded by geology. Time speeds up because i'm always thinking "is that range gold bearing, or are those
mountains fossil bearing, or is that dirt road leading to turquois deposits?" Not to mention golden eagles, antelope, wild horse herds, big horn sheep, and best of all - silence!

Which one did you get?
Run your material again to see if you're missing anything. It will give you an idea if your running at the optimum flow and angle.
