Have been very busy with work and other
projects. Not been able to get out much.

As many know, I love walking in the woods
and finding................. anything. I'm not really
a coin shooter.

So.......................

Have to get into work today at midnight so out
early so I can catch a nap this afternoon/evening.

Two weeks ago I was in the woods and found a
1940 wheat and a 1942 dime in a small area.
Said to myself, "why here?"

Went to the same location for a few hours yesterday
and came up with a 192? wheat and a 1935 buffalo
nickel. ;D

Today I thought I'd do a bit more in the area.
Think its a 191? wheat and a 1912 V nickel.

I know this area, did a lot of research on it, but
nothing says in the small spot I'm working that
anything special went on. Also seems funny that
there is very little junk, mostly the round outer rims from
old cans; no clad at all. :-\ Bit of old glass shards.

Have no idea why these coins are in the area. :-\
But I'll take them ;D ;)

Looks like a great spot. I have yet to find an area like that. I guess it goes to show that you can do all the research you want, but you have to get out and hunt.

Congrats on the V Nickel and other nice finds! I often wreck my brain trying to figure out why things are where I find them. I found a 1964 Quarter behind an old WWII Army barracks this evening here in Germany, a no brainer why it's there but I did not have to dig, just scraped the leaves away with my foot and it was on the surface of the dirt. Neat find!
I don't see it in the pic, but check just outside the dot next to the rim, just left of the C in cents for an S mintmark. As that was a key date coin. Even a dug nickel is worth a little $$$ if it's a key date.
Congrats,
Jules

Skrimpy,

yes, think it would be the old beer cans.

Property was farm field; owners house and
outbuilding were across and down the road
about a 1/4 mile. This area has several small
wetlands in it today, not sure what it was like
in the past, is low land. The area I am working
is a small ridge. In the 1940's the property was
taken over, (sold to), the forest preserve
district. By the dates of the coins it just seems
that something was going on prior to the takeover
by the forest preserve district. Also the lack of
a lot of modern junk or any newer coins means that
the area has not seen much use, main portion
of this preserve is down the road a bit.

Could be some sort of early picnic grove or
meeting spot but I cannot find anything written
about anything being there. Not sure I would want
to spend a summer evening there with the lowlands
and the bugs. The fact that it is just a small ridge,
if you put an old road down the center not much room
would be left for a big get together. Perhaps just an
old get together place for the local lads of the period.
But six older coins in the small area just seems like
a lot. The ridge has older trees than the surrounding
area. In the 30's and 40's the forest preserves would buy farm
property and reforest it a bit at a time, any areas they
were not reforesting they would still lease out to farmers.
The older trees would have been there prior to the purchase
by the district, so they would have been there when the
farmer was working the land, perhaps because of the
wetlands this area was not worked.

Who knows :-\

have a good un.........

Has no one here had to "use the facilities" while on an outing? That's the ....ummmm....second thing I thought of. The first is not quite family rated..... ;)

How cool is that? Who knows..they may have been lost for all time had you not been there that day. Great finds, post again later when you find more!
