I havent found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

Like BB mentioned, you may have to actually get out; the coins aren't going to come to you. Get someone to take you to the bank, take $5, and buy 10 rolls of pennies, you can search them for wheat cents. If you can spend more than that, buy more. Re-roll the ones you don't keep, and spend them at the store.

Go to a junk yard and look in old car ashtrays, under rubber mats, and under the back seat

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

Go to an older school.Go to an old church and ask the pastor/minister if you can detect there.Ask at any older houses in a safe neighborhood if you can detect their yard.

Wish we could do that here! Unlike the old days, now you have to know exactly what part you need....either they will go get it, or you will be escorted into the yard, so no monkey business! Good idea, tho. ffd

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

Being that thejoker is from Mississippi, one would think that there is a greater opportunity to find rural junk yards...

Even bike thru the boonies and find junkers along the roads or in farm yards or barns...

Gotta be inventive

Check the Coinstar machines at your local big box store.

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

Think in terms or where coins were being used...like busstop, produce stand, newspaper vending machines and old gas stations, things like that in your area. Playgrounds and totlots (kiddie equipment) especially.

Take your time and make a general map or your neighborhood. Get permission first, just ask for their Name, and write it down in a little pocket notebook. Carefully go over the entire area, concentrate on 20ft x 20ft patches at a time, from a known landmark, tree/bush/house/yard/sidewalk/intersection. Before you go digging up neighborhood, log targets in notebook, noting sound/descrimination-setting/previous-targets-dug-there. You would be surprised what turns up along walking paths, both sides of sidewalks, backstops and the like.

Practice with a test bed you make in your own back yard, to get experience with your machine. Experience using your machine counts the most. Use headphones if possible, greatly improves your odds.

Hey man! To get anything, the kid (THEJOKER) needs to get off his duff and use the shanks mare or bike around to find anything....if not, then he needs to get a cup and sit on the walk in front of a store and beg for coins...(not a bad idea)

Oh, by the way, finding coins without a MD unit is not very promising...

At the young age of 13, he should be able to go at least a mile or so in any direction...so many options are open...see above contributors...

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

My interpretation of his original post was that he could not travel, being only 13, rather than sitting in the house as some of you took it.

On one hand, his id shows a Discovery 2000, whatever that is, but he says he has no detector.

Actually, to me he sounds like a kid who wants to get up and go, with few or no resources, rather than a lazy kid.

I have been wrong before and expect to be wrong again, but that's how I took his posting, though I do not understand why he posted the same thing as before, more or less. Well, I guess because he's 13. Can y'all remember that far back? ;D

By the time I was 13, I had already saved up money from months and months of cutting grass and bought my first real detector. I was 13 when I found my first diamond ring and my first Seated silver coins. I walked to sites from my house--out in the fields I had permission for. Some were several miles away.

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

The problem is today the soccer moms are scared to death, and a large percentage of kids that age aren't even allowed out the door by themselves. Job? Earn money? Probably not. It's a totally different world.

In the 50's, they let us go out at lunch in HS. We'd go down town, pick up some ammo for rabbit hunting, and take it home with us on the bus. Today, they call the cops when some kid draws a picture of his dad in military uniform with his rifle.

Hope he finds some.

If anybody has any tips on anything that doesnt require going anywhere to find older coins with or without a metal detector please reply. Any answers would be appreciated.

NOTICE::::I'm only 13.

You don't need a metal detector, but it sure helps. I found my first stash of indian cents at age 14, down in the Everglades. Our baseball coach got us summer jobs helping some farmers bale hay and clean-out their barns. (Of course, this was nearly 50 years ago.) We were paid $1 an hour. Anyway, we would bale hay in the morning, and clean the barns in the afternoon. One of the barns had a lot of old "junk" piled up in the back. As we were moving the "junk" outside, I found a crappy, rusted old gum machine. The glass was broken, and when I shook it, there was hardly no sound inside. I asked the farmer how much he wanted for it, intending to buy it for my antiques-loving mom. He said "take it". I brought it home and put it in the garage to clean it. My mom found it in the garage, thanked me for the gift, but let me know she really didn't collect them. She said to clean it up anyway, because she knew someone who might be interested in it. Eventually I got around to opening it, and in the money cup there was a black wad of some tar-looking stuff. I removed the money cup and began to clean the "tar" out. I discovered the tar was old, melted gum/candy. Mixed in the tar was 24 indian cents (which I still have to this day).

You're down in Mississippi, right? I know they got farmers in Ole Miss! Get cracking!

Re: I haven't found ANY coins yet!!!! Help PLEASE!!!!

Well, I'm 13 and coin roll hunting is a great way to find old coins. I've found over 200 wheat pennies, 5 silver dimes, 2 silver quarters, and 5 silver halves (all in the same year). It's simple too!! :D
