way back in the 1600's and earlier the preist often wore a gold chain that was double around the neck..well one of its purposess was a form of payment..if they needed money they simply broke a link off and used it as cash..a lot of the exploration ships made voyages with a priest onboard to fight against pirates and they too wore chains made of gold and it was for the ships usage..in a by-gone era even the most hardened pirate would not rob a priest or other religous person..this came from a professor of history and archalogy..

Your professor of history and archeology is not very well read about what protestants and pirates were willing to do to priests and nuns. While they did wear gold chains and use them for the purpose you stated they were no more safe from theft than anyone else. If you look in European and some US museums you will see large wooden crucifixes worn by priests which acted as switchblades and you could make a very sharp knife blade come out of one end. They were made for self defense. If they were safe they would not have been made, needed or purchased by the priests. siegfried schlagrule
