Hi Guys! I am Looking For People To Help Me Figure Out Ideas And Ways On How To Make Some New Beach Rakes/Shovel/Scoops/Sifters.

Might I ADD This Is For BEACH SIFTING IN SOFT SAND... SO I DO NOT NEED IT TO BE SOMETHING FOR HARD SAND OK!

What I Have is some Heavy Duty Style Chicken Wire That I Had Found, And What I Did Was I Went To Went To Walmart and Bought a Net For Fishing, and Cut The Net off, and Then Attached The Wire To It.. So What I Was Wondering Is This....

Is There Anybody That Could Help Me Make Some Really Neat and Usable Beach Rakes?
I was Wondering if anyone Would Have Any Ideas on What I Could Do With The Materials I have Supplied in the Pictures
I Have The Chicken Style Wire, Not To Mention Plenty of Tools To Build Them, As Well As Maybe Some Items I could Use as Handles.

As You Could See I Have Already Made One... I Made A Nice Little small One That I am Looking To Try Out, But I Would Like Some Of Your Ideas!!

So Please, All input would Be Appreciated!! Please Let Me Know What You Guys Think! And What Ideas You Might Have!
Also I am Looking to make a Rake That would Act As A Shovel That I Could Dig Into the Soft Sand at the Beach To Use as A Sifter

Thanks So Much Guys For All The Help

You are on the right track for doing work...... :laughing7:

It would help if you got the book by Warren Merkitch, called Beachcomer's Handbook. I think Kellyco might still carry it. He describes how to make beach rakes for sifting the sand.

Buy a galvanized grain scoop from a grain dealer (many in Florida). They cost about $8. Drill baby drill 7/8 to 1/2 inch holes. Have a 1/2 inch coupling welded to the back at a 35 degree angle and brace it up with 2 brackets on both sides of coupling ($10). Use a 1/2 scrap rigid pipe cut to length for handle and you have a $150 scoop. You might want to paint the pipe and welds with some rustoleum paint as the handle and welds will rust in time. (rigid pipe was too heavy and went to a wooden broom handle....much better)

I made one similar to yours once. I used the same fishing/crab net frame like yours. The problem was that even in the fine sand, the metal frame fatiqued where it joins the handle and it eventually broke there.

I am not sure what use you are planning for yours. Is it to be used as a scoop or are you planning to actually use it for a rake to randomly rake up sand to see if you sift anything out of it?

If you are looking for a scoop, I would just buy one already made. If you are looking for a sifter type rake to comb the dry sand beach with to see what you get, there is something already made that will do well. It is a Sandflea Rake. They can be found online. Do a search. You may already know about them but this would be my suggestion for a hand held sifter if this is what you are intending to use it for. You are talking about 50 bucks for a good one. It is still lots of work no matter what you use by hand but these are made for dragging in the sand like you would do if you were randomly sifting and they have handles strategically placed for putting pressure on the basket to get down in the sand as you pull.

You can pull these along in the dry soft sand and skim about 1 inch or so or you can put pressure on them and get maybe three or so inches but not with a steady pull. It is more like hoeing a garden type motion at that depth.

If you want to be entertained while seeing how they work, click this link although the one on this this webpage, (the rake not the woman), appears to be cheaply made.

I keep finding better pics. The last one is a homemade monster. The guy says he can get 6 to 8 inches per scoop with that thing and I believe it!!!

Here are some pics. Good luck.
