You're right about the shovel. Add a sifting screen and you've got the ultimate detector--well, for some things anyway.

I've owned so many different brands of detectors and they all let me down. Oh well, I'll just keep looking.

Absolutely wonderfuly story and web site. And I was wondering if I should take my MD to North Carolina when I go at the end of the month. (Yeah I know, DUH!) I also think that it is very cool how you met this guy on vacation in Russia, stayed in touch, and eventually went to visit him in England. That makes for a much better trip than just staying in a hotel and going alone.
