most of the ones I've seen have green and yellow markings, this one is a southern species with red taking the place of yellow

It's a little hard to tell from the picture, but I think it's actually a Prairie King Snake. The darker variety looks a lot like your picture.

I don't think I have ever seen a garter snake raise up that high either but i could be wrong. Those are some good pics
of him though.

I did a little more research. this is actually a Western Rat snake like this one.

It makes sense (name of the snake), Rats are big...it is a big snake...a meal for a large kind of snake. :icon_sunny:

Hey sniffer I think the second idea is right its a Rat snake, I think! Garters here I've seen are a little greyer.

look up garter snake on google, I quit counting, too many different colors
the Rat snake can grow to about 6 ft, so I guess I found one on the upper end

I googled fish snake and nothing came up. Might be a local name that some people call any snake that they see eating fish.
