Also, is there some sort of insert that is missing from the hollow section?

It's a fob wax seal that used to be a hardstone intaglio. I have attached the one on e-bay. Bugga the stone is missing. It could have fetched a neat amount

To be honest, it had as good a chance of being plain (no engraving at all) or just 'hatched' as it was mostly decorative around the neck in this period. Fashion to show stature, breeding & wealth when you had none.
