When did you serve Don? I served as photo interpreter for Air Force Intelligence, also known as Intelligence Airman. You know, buildings with no windows, and vault doors with very limited access, it could be pouring rain outside and I would have no clue without someone telling me or see it on cctv or radio. I remember we all would listen to Paul Harvey's daily radio show on the radio, no TVs with TV programming in the offices then, but the Colonel I worked for would let me listen to rock if I didn't turn it up too loud.

I know what you mean, I went in in Nov 67, in Jan 68 North Korea captured the USS Pubelo, thought we were going to strike N. Korea, the Tet offensive hit in Nam in Jan 69 too, and fleets of Russian Bear Bombers would fly towards our shores over the Bearing Strait to test our response using their satellites to see where our fighters snd bombers responded from, height of the cold war then and we played WWIII every day, happened on average at least once a month, and most times the public knew nothing about it. Missle bases would warm the ICBM missiles up, SAC bases would launch ever B52 combat ready bomber carrying nukes to fail safe points to wait on orders to fly to Soviet Union, if you got the order to go there was no reversing the order. Pilots were told to ignore radio transmissions once order to go was given. It was rather nerve racking at the time.

Watch the old movie called "Fail Safe" with Henry Fonda and Larry Hagman sometime, it will give you a glimpse of what it was like..

TH,
At MarchAFB, we sometimes had 3 possibly four B-52s practicing 'touch and goes' while at the same time wounded coming in on C-119s via Alameda NAS--like wathcing the show MASH. The next day we would be treating dependents (delivering babies, etc.) The situation was surreal.

I use to fly on the 52s, I would be ready to land and suddenly 52 took off, I asked crew chief what was going on and he would say pilot needs to complete his mandatory touch and go for the month, I wanted off the plane so I could go to NCO club for a beer sometimes they would do a dozen touch and goes, each time I was thinking this has to be the last one, then up it would go.....lol

On kadena AFB Okinawa we had 52s returning after strikes on Nam, when they started striking Hanoi and Haiphong Harbor in North Viet Nam some would limp in from AA fire.
