Hello all,

We found this rock and can't seem to identify it.

1. Non-magnetic
2. Does not leave a red streak on ceramic tile
3. Leaves little to no marking during the test. Just a faint black mark.
3. Grooved tile when performing the streak test
4. Approximately 1.8lbs
5. Found in Florida
6. Black in color

What do you all think it can be?

I'm not sure but it kind of looks like it could be basalt, which does in fact leave a black or gray streak. Do I see a spot that may have had barnacles on it at one time? Could it have been some ship ballast that was dumped long ago?

I'd venture a wild guess at black chert, that's the best I've got :D
the fracture and luster looks the same as any chert I've found here in MI but most of ours is from off-white to gray to yellow but I know some areas have black...

In this lighting it appears grey, but in person it is solid black. When I did a google search for visually similar images, it came back meteorite. It looks similar to basalt, but up close it is different. I've attached three more pictures of the other side and the broken piece.

I don't see a spot where there might have been barnacles.

Chert, or perhaps even flint seems possible. The black streak is odd though. Chip an edge and show us the fresh surface.
