Looking for help trying to identifying this silver piece I recovered. It measures 1 3/4” by 1 3/4” corner to corner. Found at a super old site that produces tombac, flat buttons. To me, it looks like it has a ship and mast carved into it? Thanks for any help given!

That's a different way of measuring.
So it's 1 1/4" square ⬛️?
Same on both sides?
Did you test it?

Its trapezoid shape, should have been clearer on that. Not tested but 100% sure it is solid silver

Before the revolutionary War til roughly mid civil war silver was used for alot of things around the home. Britain would gather the scrap silver and coinage here in America and smelt it all together to make a chunk then cut it into pieces by weights. I guarantee you that somewhere on the piece is stamped 985. There may be 2 numbers then the 85 which was common back then. Example: you'll see
54 85 or possibly a 63 85. Either way the first two digits equal 9 followed by the 85.

Looks silver but not convinced it has any markings on it, only scratches.

It may be something salvaged by a silversmith, with the intention of reuse. Possibly cut from an old tray, etc. Hard to tell.

Though is part of the plate isn't random scratching.
Looks more like a shield engraving, certainly defined lines.
