I'm on cloud 9 right now. 5 Seated!!
Okay, this is on private property and proved to be nearly impossible to get permission on.
I will only be able to detect this site for a limited time, so I’ve been hitting it as often as I can. I’m telling you right now, this will be the most productive site I’ve ever been on. I’m hunting dirt that has never been hunted by a metal detector!
The very first visit to this site was only for about 30 minutes. I just went by to get a feel for it and I wanted to see how trashy it was. I pulled a few trashy targets and then got a nice nickel signal. The nickel was an 1867 shield nickel. A few minutes later I dug up a 1900 v-nickel. As I was sitting there thinking how great of a site this was going to be, I got an odd signal on the SE and decided to dig it up. Out popped a high convex eagle button. It appears to be like the one I dug a few years ago. It was a general staff button worn by a Union officer in the civil war.
Well, that short hunt alone told me that I needed to invest as much time as I could in this site. I’ve been back a couple times and you would not believe what is coming out of the ground! There’s no way I could go through and give an account of every coin I’ve dug! It’s all a blur lol. The newest coins that I have dug were a 1914 and 1916 barber dimes.
The oldest coins were the shield nickel and an 1859-O seated dime. I also dug a first for me. I dug an 1877 Seated quarter!! Another big silver was a 1903 Barber quarter. This site has also given me 14 Indian cents so far. These coins have been in a wet area for quite some time and the Indian cents are pretty corroded! I’ve done my best to get dates off of them, but there are a few that proved impossible.
This site has been absolutely awesome and I’m trying to enjoy it while I can. I’ve dug up 20 coins from the 1800’s and 8 others from the early 1900’s. I dug a seated dime that has been worn so thin, you can barely make out the liberty silhouette on the face. I’ll put up photos of some of the coins that I have dug so you can see them.
This just goes to show you that it can never hurt to ask permission even if you think you will be turned down. Keep your eyes open for those opportunities!
I’ll keep you posted on my future visits to this site. Johnny
