I'm sure this is a noob question, but where does the signal come from?

When I'm trying to pinpoint where to dig, I try and make a back/forth then front/back pass to determine where to start, but I have a hard time centering over the object and wind up having to dig the sides of my hole out to find it.

If you look at the coil from the top, where is the "X" in the coil? Front, back, center?

I know my lower-end detector probably has something to do with it, but I'm still trying to figure this stuff out.

Thanks!

Ok, maybe I asked the question wrong. On this pic of the coil, does the signal come from 12:00, 3:00, 6:00, 9:00, or center?

Thanks again!!

When pinpointing, the signal will come from the inner circle of the coil.
BTW, there's no such thing as a stupid question :)

Middle of the inner circle depending on how flat you have your coil.
