You know, until last March I only lived about 45 miles from the border, now 150 again. That(Mexico) was our hangout spot from the age of 16 to today. I have a feeling that you would be safer most anywhere in Mexico than on the streets of Detroit. Things are interesting on the border, but it is still visited by thousands daily. Markets, restaurants, bars and so on. It is a country of "romance"(all kinds) and that includes treasure stories. People love to tell you about their, their families, their friends, friends of friends, touristas and others who have sought the gold, found ghosts guarding it and yes, it's true. They will swear to it on a bible. It's there, but guarded by evil. The cool part of all that is sitting in a bar, sipping great tequila and listening to someone tell the tale for a few pesos. Warm, relaxing, you know that You could be the one to find it. But first you finish your drink and then escort that beautiful young mexican girl back to her room to ...A country of warm, mostly friendly people...

Casca, no way am I saying that the majority of people there are bad, but there are an extremely large number that will harm you in a millisecond... The other good part is some are bringing that fine tradition right here in the USA. Extortion is a way of life, and a good livelihood there.

It was a beautiful country and relatively safe there in the 80's, today it's a different ballgame. I have no inclination to visit that ballgame and strike out :laughing7:

Austin your comments reflect most accurately Mx as it is today as well. And Phoenix is as well more dangerous than Mx. The Mx families love us as one of them. Interesting that most tourists are from everywhere else...not USa. I feel safer here than most large US cities.
Just play heads up ball as anywhere. Shame that we Americans from US have been so duped. I'm more concerned about visiting a circle K in USA. Currently in San Pancho (Nyarit) and soon heading for San Miguel Allende. Brought my Whites v3 for this trip. Traveling now as a US citizen here is less costly and dangerous than it was in the 60s. In 60..70 s I would have lost my detector to "authority's " not today.
I car bus and occasional hitch hike. Sure fun going over homework from all of you,

Compaim from Michoacan. I usually go metal detecting in Panindicuaro pomacuaro and Aguascalientes. I haven't gone in like 3 years. I'm hopeing to go again in December. Last year a guy in La colonial was arando his land with his yunta de bueyes. El arado dragged out 4 gold bars. He saw them cause he was behind the yunta. He picked em up and took em. home to hclean em up.
after he cleaned em he decided to take em to a bank far from the ranchito. He went all the way to Irapuato guanajuato to a bank there. Upon arrival he went to the bank teller. She told him to come to the manager to show em up the bars. As soon as he saw them he asked where he got em from. He said from my land I'm an ejidatario in Michoacan. Right away he explained that anything you find buried in the country belongs to the Mexican government. In that particular case the bank manager represented the Mexican government. Told him wait here I have someone who was going to come over and explain it to him. Hr made a phonecall n 5 minutes later a guy came over took himby the shoulder took him to a back room in the bank. After kicking and beating the life out of him and threw him in the trash ben in a bad neighborhood. He finally was able to somehow get home a few days later. After going to the doctor to get Medicine to get well he says he never wants to find gold again. I think that his land still has more than 4 gold bars.

It is some of the best detecting you can possibly expect.

I have a home there, My back door opens to the Pacific ocean.
I am an American Real Estate Broker, but I just can't imagine living my life without having discovered Mexico 15 years ago.
I have many American Neighbors, but the Mexicans have a lot more money then we do!!!!
Its not at all like the US, Americans have to flash. Mexico is very different

In Mexico there is no flash.... most of the population is very poor.
We can't bring our new cars and expensive clothes while we are shopping at the Calimax....
But my maid costs $35 a week and My cook preoares my meals for $50 a week.

I have a beautifull Mexican girlfriend who treats me like Lorenzo Lammas in his prime.
She is educated and comes and goes into and out of the US as she pleases. Just like many Mexicans do.

There are many myths that are perpetrated by people that have never left Boise and never will.
Perhaps its better that way

In my work, I used to go into Mexico quite a bit on certain matters. I always took an Hispanic, who spoke spanish like he lived there, with me as sort of a guide/translater. These men were Americans who knew and understood what was going on in the part of Mexico I needed to go into. We knew each other well and I trusted them. I always had an old, beat up, car that I kept at a location in Texas down by the border and that was what we drove into Mexico. I had the motor worked on and fine tuned to run like a raped ape, and the rear/tranny to go with that, but the body looked like it was a real piece of crap. Only had to use it once to out run whoever, but I was glad I had it that one time I needed it! Don't miss Mexico a bit and don't want to go back, but to those who do go back and forth now, more power to you and I wish you a safe trip.
