I went to the bank today to get my daily fix. Yes this is an addiction as we all know. The teller takes my order and heads to the back to get the box of nickels for me. Being the nosey type I peer over the counter (wow no bars or glass) looking to see if there are any halves in the rack and notice a coin in the coin sorter that looks different. The coin was in with the pennies and the same size. Oh it must be a steel penny. So I asked the teller what that wierd coin was in his penny sorter and he says "oh some foriegn junk that found its way into the penny roll." I said that I would buy it from him and he says fine. I ask how much he says 1 cent. I hand it over and get the coin. Turns out to be a silver 25 cnt piece from I think the Netherlands dated 1941. Some tellers are just clueless to the resorces they have in front of them. The coin says "WILHELMINA KONINGIN DER NEDERLANDEN" on the obverse and "24 CENTS 1941" on the reverse. It also seems to be in pretty good shape.

Wow, great find, jj! I'll check my catalog for the value.

I'm always peering over the counter at the coin rack too. Sometimes it's visible, sometimes not, depending on the teller. That's how I spotted a couple of Ikes awhile back. Supermarket checkout stands are another place to keep an eye open. They're built so close together that you can see stray coins sitting next to unopened registers. I found a 1920's wheatie this way once.

But this can backfire too. While cashing in some coins at a cashier's cage at a local casino I noticed a very old-looking quarter-sized coin laying just behind the plexiglass partition out of the cashier's view. It was so worn I couldn't make out any detail. I asked the teller for it. She moved a small machine and tried to pick it up. No luck. What I thought was a coin was actually the flat top of a large bolt that fastened the plexiglass! That was a real duh! moment for me.

Nice find! That's funny how you mention"peering over into the change tray.I find myself doing that all the time.I've got more than a few strange looks from cashiers as I stretch my neck to look in the drawer. They probably think i'm cheching out how much cash is in the drawer, casing the place for a robbery or something! :D :D-good luck-diggummup

I'm average height, 5'4" but sometimes I lean forward on my toes to see if I can get a peek at all of the coins in the tray. I haven't worked up the nerve to ask any of the tellers if they have found any foreign coins and what do they do with them. Of course I would offer to buy all of them, like many of us would. I know they must have them somewhere. lol
