So yesterday I went bank hopping to get dimes and halves where I could. I went to a td bank I occasionally hit and there was a garda truck parked outside which I thought nothing of. I came out of the bank and the truck left so I continued on. Hit a couple more banks and came into a shopping center somewhat close by and went into a chase and saw a garda truck sitting outside of a king kullen in the parking lot... Hmm... I continued on. Went to another td bank down the road and there was garda again... I had to be following the truck. So I decided I would leave and come back in a couple minutes before they questioned why I was going to all those banks and why I had like 850 worth of dimes in my car lol

I've spoken with the Garda guys before, they're usually friendly dudes. Last time I did was a couple weeks ago. I was explaining what I do as I was lugging around a $1k bag of halves, and he thought it interesting. Said he'd do it if he had the time, haha. He also gave me some invaluable insight into how coin circulates between the armored truck companies... makes me not really care and obsess over what kind of rolls I get, it's all luck, and the only real way to mitigate it is to do high volume.

You are right Merc...it is all luck. I have found some amazing WL, Bens, and other Ag's in rolls that look like they were just rolled yesterday compared to other rolls that are dirty and look like they've been sitting around for a few decades. Having said that, I'd still take the old rolls over the new ones any day of the week, but I have learned to not discount my potential "finds" simply because the rolls look newer :)

i agree. It does not matter what carrier you get. I noticed one bank i order from gets coin from dunbar, and garda. sometimes when i order halves from this bank i get the cube boxes and other times i get the long flat boxes. Its all about being the person who gets someones collection dump, and they are out there. 6 months ago my girlfriends father was asking me about what i have been doing looking threw all the half dollars. After i explained he said "thats cools i have 1500$ worth of halves i have been trying to bring to the bank for the past 2 years but never get around to doing it, maybe we should look threw them". Lets just say thank god we did. pulled a dozen or so bens, 50 something 1964s and close to 200 40% out of his stash. Now imagine that stash going to the bank being put in bags and sent to lets say brinks for processing. Imagine getting some of those rolls in your boxes! you just never know.

It's interesting that he didn't know what CRH was, since he was a supplier for many coin hunters. Why would any bank order halves if not for CRH?

That is a good question, in fact I can't imagine where you would even find or use half dollars. Has anyone ever run into a half dollar not at a bank?

Yes, at a 7-Eleven. They could be spent by an older customer/CRHer, but never many of them, so it is only when someone spends one.

Believe it or not, there are still a few places that use halves to give out in change. There are two in particular where I live anyway.

Wow I never would have thought places are still using them for change. They just kinda seem impractical, after all people complain about the presidential dollars, the.half is a bigger coin yet its worth less

There aren't any around here, but probably, the cashier asks the people if they want the halves. They may say yes, because they think they are rare.

I believe some of the casinos in Vegas and maybe other places used 1/2s as payout for blackjack...$5 bet pays $7.50 hence use of the half.

i've been to a retail store that gives out halves as change... they literally have unopened crimped rolls sitting in the cash register... only because they are a local business that has no sales tax and rounds to the nearest 50 cents :laughing7: talk about tax evasion...
