iontyre's log

I was an avid collector when I was young (teen years) but drifted away from the hobby during college and my 'child rearing' years. But with my kids finally adults I have returned to the hobby. Since I have lots of holes in my current coin series to fill in, my roll searching is not focused on finding silver, like so many others here. I'm simply trying to fill in all the dates and mint marks for my Lincolns, Jeffersons, Roosevelts, Washingtons, and Kennedys. If I find silver along the way, more power to me! Of these sets, I only need the following circulating issues:

Lincolns: 1909S, SVDB, 1914D, 1922Plain, 1983D, 1992D, 2005D, 2009 Formative, Professional, and Presidency, all D, 2010D, 2011D
Jeffersons: 1975D, 1977D, 1982D, 1997D
Roosevelts: 1970D, 2008D, 2009D
Washington (non silver 1965-1998): 1968D, 1970, 1992D
Statehood and Territories: Alabama D, Texas D, West Virginia D, Idaho D, Hawaii D, DC D, Samoa D, USVI P&D
State Parks: Hot Springs P&D, Yosemite D, Grand Canyon D, Mt Hood D, Gettysburg D, Vicksburg D, Chickasaw D, El Yunque D, Chaco Culture D, Acadia P, Hawaii Volcanoes P&D, Denali D
Kennedys: Too many to list! Hard to find banks with rolls.

I started a couple of weeks ago, just getting four each of cents, nickels, dimes and quarters. I filled in a lot of what I needed at the time, and did come across some extras like canadian cents and a nice 1928 Buffalo nickel.

I don't expect to find those first four missing lincolns, but the rest should be out there, and it will be exciting to complete each set.

I just finished going through 3 rolls of dimes and found a couple that I had needed (1972D, 1995D), three more rolls to go through right now looking for those other three...

Other three rolls of dimes did not get me any of the ones I needed, but I did get two British 5 pence (1990 and 2005) in one of the rolls.

I've got 6 rolls of quarters, 5 rolls of nickels and 4 rolls of cents to go through the rest of this weekend.

Weekend summary:

3 rolls dimes, 4 rolls cents, 5 rolls nickels, 6 rolls quarters:

Listing needed dates/mintmarks first, then bonus finds:

Dimes: nada
Cents: 1983D, 2005D, 2011D + 1937, Canada 1962 and 2002, 39 other copper cents
Nickels: 1975D, 1997D + 1941, 1946, 1954
Quarters: 1968D, 1992D, Hawaiian Volcanoes P + other ATB quarters and some territories quarters (low mintage, I'm saving those!)

So now I just need 2 nickels and 1 Washington quarter to complete those collections (clad quarters to 1998 only).

Working through some more rolls this week. From six rolls of dimes I completed my Roosevelt circulating clad collection (found the 1970D, 2008D and 2009D). I do have all the silvers too, got that set back in around 1974 for $11! I also got a 1983 ten centavos from Dominican Republic in one of the dime rolls.

Just one nickel left to find: 1977D.

Found my 1992D cent, but the 2009D's and 2010D are really eluding me. Will keep searching. Would really like to find a 2000 Wide AM too.

Still some rolls of quarters to go through. Then I am contemplating ordering a box of halves...

Getting you folks up to date:

Roll finds (basically about 4-6 rolls of each denomination cent - quarter) over the last few weeks have found me much of what I needed to complete my modern circulating collections. I have all Roosevelt dimes (except proof only issues and the 1996W) through 2013. I only need one Jefferson (1977D) and one Washington (1970). Still need a few State quarters (all D', for Texas, West Virginia, Hawaii, DC, American Samoa, and USVI) and 11 AtB (again mostly D, except for Hot Springs P). The later date cents I still need are all the 2009D's except Birth and Childhood, and a 2010D.

I may just pick up some of these at the Whitman Baltimore show this week. Hardly seems worth going through more rolls for these right now. I did order my first box of halves though which I should get this week. Then I can start really finishing off my Kennedy collection.

So, I parked my car at the park and ride and went about buying my ticket for the Light Rail here in Baltimore to go to the show. $1.60 fare, pop in two bucks and out comes the $.40 change. Quick scan, and the nickel in the bunch is my last JEfferson needed to complete my circulated set, the 1977D! Day was off to a great start!

At the show I picked up a 1909-S Lincoln in Fine-12 for a fair price, and also grabbed very RED BU 2009D formative, professional, and presidential along with a 2010D for all of $2 total. Finally, found a real nice set of high-grade uncirculated 1944D and 1944S Jeffersons to upgrade my war nickels... they are all MS examples now.

Still working through my box of halves. No silver, highlight was a 2006D NIFC... not even half way through the box yet.

Final total for my first and only box of halves:

0 Silver
2 proofs: 1992S and 2001S
5 NIFC: 2005D, 2006D, 2008D, 2009P, and 2010D

Maybe I'll try again in a few months. Still need the 1991D, 1993D, and 2001P to complete the full list of circulated halves.
