I remember this piece when I was about 6. At the time and considering my age, it held no significant important to me other than ooooh... it"s pretty! About 50 years ago my dad acquired it along with a similar chunk and had them polished up as specimens. One went to one of his buddies and eventually I got my hands on this one after my dad passed away. Seems no other family member wanted it... silly people. Any guesses as to it's lovely contents? Silver veins front back and sides with upper right pale gold. I resized these pictures and some of the detail has suffered however the 2nd picture is a closeup of the top right of the the piece with a smaller gold prize sitting on it.

Try a metal detector on it and see if it has metal in it. If it does, use a magnet to see if it's ferrous or not.
You could have a specimen of either silver or platinum ore.

Looks similar to Nye County Montana platinum/palladium ore to me.

Here is a sample of silver ore from Ontario Canada.

Another silver ore sample.

Well whatever it is I would keep it because of the family connection.
