It's Asian, I couldn't tell you from where. They are cool to find, I have found a couple.

Chinese cash coin...

used to have a web site that could date the coin for you and I'm sure someone else does. Unfortunately there don't have much value but could date back to the 1600's!! Nice find!

I have a old japanese coin that looks exactly like that I bought in Okinawa. Age and value? I dont have the answer to that. The Chinese had control for along time before the Japanese. So, could may be chinese. But when I bought it it was in with a group of Japanese coins. Not much help, sorry. HH Sonny

"Now men, here at the Rock we have two basic rules: number one, obey all rules..." Barney Fife. He was the greatest, and the show was never the same after he left. I'm sure Barn would have been able to identify this one for me; he was, after all, somewhat of a know-it-all. Thanks for the tips!

I checked the coin against that last post and didn't find a match. The reverse appears to be from Peking, and the coin is about 25mm across. Thanks for all the effort so far!

Thats the site! Great call... it is Chinese.

Try this page specifically halfdime... http://www.sportstune.com/chinese/coins/chienlung.html
Either your picture or coin is slightly fuzzy, but I know you can compare it to the coin son this page and find yours... the measurement will get you closest. And, the coin's reverse will have the mintmark on it... this site has that information too.

It's an easy site to research and it helps me look smarter than I really am... have fun!

Montana- I checked that page out and the first coin shown matches the one I have. Now, how old is it? I don't know what the reference number means. It's 8:45am in the East, and I'm heading to a new site in the neighborhood; I'll check back in later!

I responded to your PM... but the short answer is at the top of that page:

Dynasty: Ch'ing (1644 - 1911 a.d.)
Emperor: Kao Tsung (1736-1795 a.d.)
Reign Title: Ch'ien Lung (1736-1795 a.d.)

Halfdime,

I found one also about a week or two ago. I can almost match it from the site provided, seems that the rev bottom is a little differnt than any on the site. But not being familier with the coins I sure it matches one of them. Good question on the date or age of the coins.

Chinese/Irish were laborers & built the canals& railroads & no doubt drop & lost all types of things in there hayday.I would say its a chinese token used for money.

Re: Is it real? Where's it from? Help!

It's a Chinese cash coin... it's from the 1700s as indicated.

There are tokens as well that look like coins and some can be seen at that site. A close look at the symbols and charactors will tell you what you have or get you close. Some of them ARE rare so look closely.

It may well be your oldest identifyable find... but it's not rare and fairly common. It's worth a buck or two as a collectors item.

No matter what it's a cool find - I've identified a dozen on here in the last few months.
