is there a way to preserve musket balls

I wouldn't think they need any Preservation.
 

I would like to find one. I did find an old Hoe the other day and should clean it up and put some oil or
something on it to keep it from rusting more.

I'm waiting on the answer here on the preservation idea.
 

other than tap water and maybe a soft bristle toothbrush to knock off dirt do not clean them as it kills any value they have......g

I think I had a case of Disco Ball in 1979...... :-X
 

As previously stated, lead generally needs no special treatment, although it can develop a thin layer of white oxide over time— as seen, for example, on Civil War bullets. That said, here's a link to a page detailing lead conservation methods used by marine archaeologists:
