I could be wrong but I believe that the environmental damage was due to the contaminants in the air in the location where the coin was stored or has been! In other words, it may have been kept in an environment such as an Industrial Plant/Factory where there was Sulphur and other contaminants in the air along with the likelihood of a lot of smokers but from the appearance, Sulphur was likely the biggest contributor.

I agree with huntsman. It looks like artificial toning from sulphur. You get the same effect by boiling an egg, chopping it up when its done. You put the egg in a container with the coin and a few minutes later, that's the result you get.
