It could indeed have been started 40 years ago. It doesn't say it was filled 40 years ago and sat full since then. I would expect the top part of the jar to contain newer cents if the person was still filling it up until recently. That being said, I would have no problem offering $400.

Personally I don't think he did any research and just came up with that figure out of the air and he is just hoping to find someone who will take his word for it. If it was worth $200 he would not be putting all that change in it with the risk of busting it open.

Correct. I would just empty the contents and send the jug to auction. It would probably realize 30 - 40 dollars.

Yeah right? I have a few myself. I see them at garage sales too, usually around $5-$10 tops.

yep. those glass 5 gallon water bottles are a dime a dozen around here. I have 5 0r 6 of those and picked them up for 2-3 bucks each. def not worth 200. lol
