Sounds bout right, but uncle sam thew a monkey wrench into that. Now illegal to melt coins down for there metal value.

U got to remember even though its a nickel it might not be pure nickel, u need to check out the composition of them before going overboard, quarters the same way. Somebody posted the compositions of American coins here before don`t know bout canadian coins.

The real question is, " How would the 'government' know you were melting pennies and pouring copper ingots; silver coins and pouring silver ingots?" What kind of tests could they use to prove what you've done? Especially if you've purified the silver. Also, when melting the copper pennies, one could mix in some bits of brass or some bits of copper wire material to change the ingots metallurgical makeup. Just random thinking. ;) ;) :-X
