I received this email -----

90# on your telephone

I dialed '0', to check this out, asked the operator, who confirmed that this was correct
so please pass it on .. . . (l also checked out Snopes.com <http://snopes.com/& gt; <http://snopes.com/> .. This is true, and also applies to cell phones!)

PASS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW

I received a telephone call last evening from an individual identifying himself as an AT&T Service Technician (could also be Telus) who was conducting a test on the telephon e lines. He stated that to complete the test I should touch nine(9), zero(0), the pound sign (#), and then hang up. Luckily, I was suspicious and refused.
Upon contacting the telephone company, I was informed that by pushing 90#, you give the requesting individual full access to your telephone line, which enables them to place long distance calls billed to your home phone number.

I was further informed that this scam has been originating from many local jails/prisons DO NOT press 90# for ANYONE.

The GTE Security Department requested that I share this information with EVERYONE I KNOW.

After checking with Verizon they also said it was true, so do not dial 90# for anyone !!!!! PLEASE HIT THAT FORWARD BUTTON AND PASS THIS ON TO EVERYONE YOU KNOW!!!

Why the hell does the phone company even make that possible, especially after scammers discover it ?

I bet they don't forget to send a bill to the owner of that fax though . . .

The phone company is full of excrement when they tell you they can't locate a number. You used to be able to get on a public phone, dial the local switching office or even the operator, give them a phrase leading them to believe you were working on the phones and get those numbers as well as unlisted numbers . . . that was done away with when the corner phone booth went away and every operator got a computer terminal. Now they can tell when you are throwing the hockey back at them. (reference to Andy Griffith's "And Hockey is what it was")

I use whitepages.com's reverse phone search, it generally works well.

http://tracker.ahgweb.com --- links to several (always need more than one) reverse searches, people searches (gleaned from credit header searches) and other items including Social Security Number searches and SSDI.
