It's Been A Long Time Comin' - 1798 Large Cent

Between the difficulty of finding hunting sites on Long Island, the double bypass I had on my leg last August, and this terrible winter, I hadn't found anything decent for just over two years, when I found a Jersey copper, and an 18th century 2 Reale size silver coin that is totally worn smooth. Anyway, today I hit a spot that's about 30 acres of public town park property. Within a half hour I came up with a 1798 large cent with a nice readable date. Thought I had found a great new spot to hunt. But after almost three hours, good signals were far and few behind, and those were just very old and small incidental brass or copper junk. Only other keeper was a early button with no markings. I guess the large cent was a random drop and this land was not farmed, due to the lack of buttons, buckles and other pieces of farm equipment.

Excellent coin save Amigo ! Based upon what I can see of the profile of lady liberty and the strong date - I think you have a coin with
above average detail under that dirt - do please go slowly and carefully as you clean this piece .

You got a nice one there Bookfisher. A shame there wasn't much else there but at least you didn't leave empty handed. Congrats!

can't wait to see how it looks once you let it dry-flake, or clean it up, even if you don't clean it it's still an awesome find!

Nice find. I've had quite a few fields that only produce one coin or a button. That's a place I would keep in my back pocket. May produce another time. Again great find!

Nice Dirtfisher! I love those large cents. I have yet to find one in the 1700's, but have come close. Maybe this season. HH

I was wondering when you would be back in action. Spots are hard to come by nowadays. Too many people are into the hobby and too little open space, but keep plugging away!

What a great find! Just like everyone else, I'd love to see what beauty Miss Liberty is hiding beneath all that dirt. :icon_thumleft:

I'm undecided if I should attempt to clean it, since over the years I've many many Large cents I've found look worse by cleaning with and without hot peroxide.
