this was found amoung some WW2 era items from my long dead father in laws stuff --he was in papua new ginuea during WW2 -- i think this might be a war sovie from then. taken off a japanese soldier but am not sure . --more research is needed.

its handle and sheath are laquared painted wood--- the blade seems to be high carbon steel and is marked JAPAN - HI TEST

Looks similar to this one, purchased in Japan about 1954. Different wood, and different paint, but similar.

tuberale yes it is very similar -- to the 1954 japanese letter opener * from japan ---maybe it was a 1950's export trade item * that my father in law got -- i understand that some were made pre war however -- and i do know that my father in law served in papua new ginuea during WW2 fighting the japanese --this item was found by me along with a bunch of WW2 era type items --of course my 93 year old mother in law (who just passed on --thus the clearing out of items) might have co mingled his post war and war items together after he died - who knows?

Wow - these photos took me back! I can remember these being sold in the mid 60's. I bought one to use as a fishing knife because it floated, great memories, thanks.
