Jars with holes in the side?

In the rubble of an old abandoned house in the middle of the woods, we are finding many mason/atlas jars.

Many of these jars have round or round-ish holes in one side of the jar. They appear to be cut there...some are almost perfectly round and even smoothed out so the edge isn't sharp.

The holes are only in one side, so it's not like someone shot it through.

I'm just curious if anyone knows what this was for. My friend thought that maybe they used the jars to hold candles. I don't think so, though, because I think we'd find the wax. Maybe for growing some kind of plant, like starting tomato plants from seeds or something and they needed the water to drain out?

Any thoughts?
