I stumbled upon this piece of a 1942 Walker last night, while detecting an old home site. I am not sure of exactly what it is. It has a "slice" through the edge, where the reeding is, as shown in the pic. I saw some coins cut into jigsaw puzzles on the internet, maybe somebody tried to make one at home.

Any help with the ID would be appreciated.

Thanks for looking and good luck on your hunts

In the past I have found a couple of Mercury dimes that were cutout for necklaces. Maybe an attempt to make jewelry also. Pic of similar Mercury. download (12).jpg

Did you find it anywhere near a current or long-gone jail or prison site? Almost looks like a prison-made key for use in an escape attempt. The slit on the edge may have been used to mount a piece of paper or string on it...what a mystery! Sub 8-)

No jailhouse around here. It came from an older home site... post 1890 habitation.

i saw a magicians trick coin that was cut like that and had a thin elastic band around it so he could fold the coin to fit into a bottle, like magic. maybe the other pieces are around there too. JMHO

Couldn't tell you what it is, the puzzle theory sounds good to me. What are the odds you found the piece with the date on it. Maybe there are more pieces laying there still?
Pretty Awesome find!!

Btw- if I found that I'd tell everyone I found Big silver!! Lol

Interesting find, and so are the logical guesses. It certainly looks like there was a purpose for it.

Very interesting find. Does kind of look like it was being made into a key.

Gene the Machine is correct, it is a folding coin for a magic trick!

Thanks GTM! Mystery solved. You ROCK!

I looked for the other pieces, but was unable to locate them. I will give the area another look though.

That is a very cool find. I hate you didn't find the whole coin though, but I guess part of one is still a good find. I think looking at Gene's idea he was correct about it being from a magic trick. Unfortunately the other 2/3 of your coin magically disappeared.

Thanks Beez. I am just glad that it counts as a another BIG SILVER for my collection! Even though a tiny fraction of the coin has yet to be found, since it has the date, it counts!

WAY TO GO Tom! I love it, BIG silver, mystery, and clearly we can all see Beez's green eyes. Ha, Walkers are by far my favorite, very cool.

Your right again Dave, I did say that, "just when I thought I seen everything"

Great ID Subterranean!
