If it's like the 1 1/2" combo I have, the box is open and allows everything to drop right on the mat rather than run material across the mat. I added a plate to redirect the material to the back of the sluice so it flows over the mat. The grizzly is just over 1/2" and should be OK. Don't create extra work if you don't need to.

The degree if classification you do is completely dependent upon the type of material you are working. Some research and testing is required to determine what type of gold you can expect to find in the location you are working., Historical records can be important here.

All methods of gold process are a form of classification...you remove what you know is not valuable and what remains IS valuable. This is the basis of all gold recovery devices ever made.

If the spot you are working is known for fine gold and nuggets are never found then you can classify down to 1/8". Doing this rejects a huge portion of material you already know is not gold and GREATLY increases your high banker's capacity.

If you are in an area that has occasional nuggets the size of a pea then you must only classify down to 3/8" to make sure you do not cull out something very valuable.

Your small high banker is capable of processing material of any size but the more waste you feed it, the more time it requires to process it.

The purpose of a highbanker is to eliminate the need to classify. That's what the grizzly is for. But if the hopper design doesn't allow the material to be forced through the sluice, then you may as well just throw sand in it. You will never get the right flow through the sluice with the standard Jobe hopper. If the water and material are not directed to the back wall first, not even a pea sized pebble will flow through the riffles.
