I don't think you would be hating him. His song writing ability and singing voice are beyond question among the best of his generation if not the best. Plus John had been known to change. Back then the communist tried to subvert him to their side and get his money and prestige, but he refused in his song about people who hate.

John was anything but predicable so who knows what his beliefs would be today. He might have been fed up with the direction most societies are moving. But alas we can only speculate, since this giant of music was taken way too soon by evil.
