depends on moisture content. if it rained recently or a snow/frost thaw and freezing temps again then yes they will freeze

Yes they do. They hold a lot of moisture and freeze rock hard. In the spring When I hunt them I will frequently find that the top few inches are thawed, but underneath is woodchip concrete that is absolutely undiggable.

Susan is totally correct - Though I am not sure New Hampshire gets the deep frost as we do in Minnesota...........

Ringfinder, True, Minnesota is different from New Hampshire weather wise. Heck, if had my Garrett Ace 250 during the (so-called) "winter" of 2011-2012, I wouldn't have had to worry about frost, considering it was so warm. But during spring time Susan, that sounds good to me for woodchips.

If they're moist... or damp... Or god forbid completely water logged...... Yeah I see where you are going with this, could make digging a total pain in the butt?!?!

Head for the woods! The tree canopy and leaf layer lets me dig all winter in Ohio.

I find they do freeze yet digging is much easier than dirt or clay, even deep. Step up your digging tool and you'll be fine. Peace
