Once a week my wife closes the store where she works. This involves checking the cash register. She is pretty knowledgeable and often snags a wheat cent or silver Rosie for me. There is a slot in the rear for foreign coins and slugs. Today she found what she thought was a fairly unique looking quarter. After replacing it with another quarter she brought it home and presented it to me.

“That’s not a quarter”, I said, “it’s a Liberty Nickel! Nice job! :icon_thumleft: In this condition it’s worth maybe a buck. I’ll go get my coin book to show you what they look like in good condition.”

I went upstairs to get my coin book. It’s an old 2008 Blue Book, so prices are not current, but close enough. After determining the date to be 1885 I scanned the prices….1885, Mintage 1,472,700, G-4 $230!!!!! :hello2: A KEY DATE! Mine grades probably AG. Although it is not the rarest of all years minted the 1885 commands a higher price than even the 1912-S (not counting the five known 1913s which are completely off the charts).

My wife now wants to be referred to as the ‘Queen of Coin Finding’ :notworthy: and says she finds better coins than I do with my metal detector!

Nick

Nice snag she made there. Kind of surprised she thought it was a quarter though.

technically the 1913 is the rarest of all mintages for this nickel (5 known) followed by 1912-S, 238,000 - nice find !

Thanks, Argenentium. You’re right! :icon_thumright: I hope that all at TNet will forgive my inaccuracy. It was due to my unbridled enthusiasm and haste to post. :laughing7: I knew what I meant to say but it didn’t come out right. I meant to say that the 1885 commands the highest price, not counting the five 1913s which are completely off the charts. I will edit my post accordingly.

What a find, someone deserves a nice dinner with that fond or whatever she wants. LOL, wonder why that didn't stand out to the previous owner. And Quarter where did that come from.:headbang:

It still baffles me how folks will fail to notice such things. As good as my wife is she was thinking shiny instead of size so that's why she was thinking quarter. :happy3:
She definitely deserves a nice dinner for this one!
